Can’t Have? When we take a seat and look at the bigger picture, this will always be the case. We always want what we can’t have, or sometimes, what we don’t have. This does not even have to just relate to relationships and attraction to people, it applies to all sorts of objects. For instance, at this precise moment in time, I have a drawer full of chocolate, and usually I’m content with just that, but talking of wanting what we can’t or don’t have, right now, I would kill for a packet of sweets. Anything would do, from Rowntrees, Chewits or even Haribos but all I want is some sticky sweet to get my teeth stuck into!
Usually, when referring to this particular phrase of ‘wanting’ it is applied mainly to relationships and attraction towards someone. Many may have been in the situation where, you like someone, but that someone doesn’t like you? Or maybe you are committed to someone, and yet you get the wandering eye. Fact is, humans will never truly be happy with what they have, be it a drawer full of chocolates or a loving relationship. Would I say this is a weakness? Well, that’s debatable. I’d say it’s a tendency within us to always strive for change, for variety and for the need to want. Sometimes, when there is nothing wrong with the relationship one will still want or prefer someone or something else.
How do we make something so precious in our minds that we are pining over it, rather than just letting it go? After all if something is unattainable isn’t it just common sense to move on and be happy anyway? Maybe it’s just part of everyone’s DNA or is it Destiny?
The funny thing is, we will carry on wanting what we can’t have, simply because once it is actually attained, it loses its mysteriousness and it’s thrill of our imagination – the thoughts and feelings we have when thinking of it, are far more elevated than the real thing. Rest assured, if I had a drawer full of Chewits right now, I’d be dreaming of velvety chocolate melting in my mouth. And besides, if we got handed everything we ever wanted on a silver plate, life would be a big bore.
Its not as simple as this for many of you, and at times, this feeling of wanting someone or something you can’t have takes over your mind, body and soul. But remind yourself, of how short life is, remind yourself of destiny and that if it is meant to be, nothing and no one will be able to come in your way. So give yourself a break, put on a smile, but more importantly feel the smile and carry on living.
We may not always get what we want, but we will always be able to live it in our imagination, and the imagination is always perfection. The perfect version of the thing itself; that of we pine for. Still, those sweets in the picture look too damn heavenly. Wanting what I can’t have? I Think So!
You'll always be allowed to dream - They may take away 'freedom' but they can't touch your dreams.
